What is Postmark?

Postmark is a transactional email platform for software teams.

According to the vendor, Postmark focuses not only on delivery, but incredibly fast delivery. Buy focusing on transactional email and not allowing sending of bulk promotional email, Postmark maintains a pristine reputation for delivery with ISPs.

The vendor doesn't ask customers to pay extra for "improved delivery" by upgrading to a dedicated IP. They stand by their pool of shared IPs just as strongly as their dedicated IP addresses because they manually approve every account and don't allow any bulk promotional email on our IPs.

I use Postmark currently and have used it since November 2020. I use it as an SMTP for transactional email on a bunch of websites (25+). It has been as close to perfect as I've experienced with most any SaaS I've used in the last decade, and I've used a lot of SaaS. I used to use website servers for transactional email (terrible, opaque experience), then eventually moved over to sendgrid (issues with spam and not great reporting), and finally settled on Postmark.

I love how I get a weekly email for each website with a summary of the total emails sent through Postmark, and bounces (if any). Usually, if there are bounces it's because someone put in the wrong email (occasionally because someone sent a prior email to spam). This has been useful to tell e-commerce clients when one of their customers didn't receive the confirmation email due to entering the wrong email during purchase.

Everything about Postmark is great - support, setup, product, visibility into what's going on. I wasn't sure what to expect when ActiveCampaign bought it, but so far, no change. A+, highly recommend for transactional email.
  • Great, helpful customer support (rarely needed)
  • Reliable product
  • Well thought out interface, easy setup
  • Great ongoing visibility into status of emails sent through Postmark
  • Honestly, there is no real place I would expect them to improve.
Postmark is great if you need a reliable SMTP provider.
  • Weekly emails with insight into status of all emails sent through the system
  • Easy DNS setup
  • Easy to use dashboard
  • Made me feel confident in my ability to offer reliable transactional email for websites we're hosting. Great for ongoing peace of mind.
In my opinion, sendgrid is complete garbage compared to Postmark, it's not even a comparison. I had issues with emails being sent to spam using sendgrid IPs. The dashboard is inferior, the setup is fairly comparable in difficulty, and ongoing visibility is inferior.
The only thing that confused me initially was that if you don't put a specific sender email into the Wordpress plugin settings (I use Postmark exclusively with Wordpress site), it won't send emails. I thought that having selected the option to send via any @domain.com email, I wouldn't need to fill out a specific email to send from, but that isn't the case. I sorted that out quickly with support.

We send primarily transactional email - notifications for verifying user email addresses, for new messages received, and alerts based upon user preferences. We also send occasional, more generic broadcast emails to subsets of the user base. Postmark has been the most effective email provider in ensuring that emails end up in user inboxes. This is especially critical for us, considering we require email verification to begin using our services.
  • Email deliverability
  • Uptime and stability
  • Delivery and open tracking
  • I wish the DMARC monitoring service was built-in
  • I wish they kept historical records longer, or had an option to
  • I wish they helped set up BIMI
  • I wish they had a feature to validate/verify an email address
If email deliverability is important, then Postmark is king. I've used all sorts of providers, with dedicated IPs and without. Postmark has always had the best deliverability and has resulted in the least amount of customer service time wasted dealing with users who simply did not receive an important email from us. It is pricier than other options, but it's well worth it if deliverability is at all important to you.
  • Email deliverability
  • Bounce tracking
  • API for getting delivered, opened and clicked records
  • Customer service isn't wasting time on "email wasn't received" problems
  • Customer service can better understand customer problems by seeing what emails someone received and if they opened/clicked on them
  • Customer engagement is higher because they are receiving emails from our application consistently
  • Mailgun and from Pathwire
I've also used AWS Simple Messaging Service (SES) but couldn't select it from the above, as well as the old one Mailchimp used to run and shut down. We had big deliverability issues with those services, inconsistent but often for self-hosted email providers and free email providers like Hotmail or Yahoo.

I use Postmark to send all transactional emails for a web-based baseball simulation game that I created called Pennant Wars.

Some examples of transactional emails are for new user sign-up, order confirmation, password reset, and emails dynamically alerting users about in-game occurrences (end of a season, monthly team report, etc.).
  • Easy to integrate with
  • Very good delivery rates
  • Open tracking
  • Supports bootstrapped businesses
  • Postmark meets all of my needs, and there's nothing missing that I wish it had.
Postmark is really well suited for my use case. Another thing to mention is the fact that it allows you to trigger webhooks on events like email bounce or spam complaints.

I can't speak to how well-suited Postmark would be for other use cases or at a much larger scale. For what I need, it's perfect, and it has been one of, if not the most, stable pieces of my entire stack.
  • Ease of use
  • Cost efficient
  • Stability
  • Spam/bounce webhook integration
  • It is really "set and forget." I have not had any issues that I've needed to deal with. It just works.
I got lucky, and Postmark was the first option I tried.

Postmark is used as our primary production email service. We also utilize it for our client support team to track transmission and receipt of various emails sent to our direct and indirect customers. We have been utilizing their service for years, and I don't anticipate us making a change anytime soon.
  • Excellent real time tracking of production server.
  • Automated reporting is very nice. Great to not have to pull reports manually.
  • User management is very easy.
  • Cost effective.
  • Latency can be an issue.
  • Postmark utilizes a status page, which is very helpful however the last incident we experienced with Postmark was not documented on the page.
  • API was simple to write to.
We are a software company that utilizes Postmark for our production emails. We have sent just over 3 million emails in the last 30 days, and have had no issues within that time period.

Postmark support can be slow to respond when an issue arises, however they always resolve issues within a timely manner.

Generally our emails are not time sensitive, so it is not an issue for us but if you need emails delivered immediately-you might want to weigh options.
  • We need a reliable email server with excellent uptime. Postmark has delivered.
  • Postmark is a relatively low cost solution.
  • Set it and forget it. Once we configured the service to our needs we have not had to adjust.
We found Postmark early on and have not looked back. There has never been a need to reevaluate the solution, as its cost is fair and the service has functioned as expected. We regularly recommend Postmark to our partners.
Postmark has been an excellent solution for our business needs. We have been with them for years and have no intention of changing providers anytime soon. Support was excellent as we were getting started and their API documentation made implementation quick and easy.

We use Postmark to send transactional emails from our own website. This includes e-commerce sales/receipts and support requests/messaging. We also use Postmark to handle inbound messaging and routing.
  • Deliverability is far better than any other ESP I've used
  • Customer support is quick, friendly and passionate
  • You can tell this is a small company which cares about their services
  • Nice UI with a clear 45-day history of messages/events
  • The new Rebound API is awesome for catching users who enter the wrong email address during an order/signup request
  • I wish there was an annual payment option. Currently, you can only pay monthly.
Postmark is essential if you need your emails to reach customer inboxes. It's more expensive than other providers, however, I see this as a bonus as it will help to reduce exploitation and "bad actors" from damaging the shared IP reputation.
  • Fewer support requests for "I have not received my order email!??!111"
  • More happy customers receiving their orders faster
In terms of UI and deliverability, Postmark really blows other ESPs out of the water. We've seen a huge improvement in delivery rates, especially for Outlook/Live/Hotmail email addresses.
